How To Make Sure Social Media Does NOT Use You
Wait…what?! Yes, social media‘s whole plan is to get you sucked in and not let you out. If you allow it your soul will be stripped from you and you will become an mindless zombie spending mindless hours in Facebook. To make sure that happens here are some great tips I have found useful to make sure that I use the networks and not the other way around.
List Your Social Media Sites
The first step is easy. List the networks that you enjoy using and can see some type of reward from such as making connections or checking your referral stats to see which ones are bringing you traffic and which ones are not.
Time Yourself on Networks
Not, literally but seriously time yourself on how long you spend on Facebook, Twitter, Plurk, LinkedIn, etc. If you are doing research or trying to contact people that is completly different. I’m referring to spending time ‘surfing’ – we’ve gone from surfing the net to surfing the social networks. This can kill your progress quickly.
Determine Your Goals Before Hand
This is extremely tricky – IF YOU LET IT. You know you visit these sites so why not have a goal in mind or even written down. One instance is I am promoting an artist on Facebook but can only send a message out to a certain amount of people so I have to make list. I make sure that before I respond to any messages on the network I finish this project first. This is the portion where you need to make sure you don’t get side tracked from your goal. If you just want to take a break and send messages to friends/family then “time” yourself that for 15 minutes you will do nothing but catch up with your contacts on facebook. Don’t let that 15 minutes turn into 45. Set a timer or a reminder to pop up that stats “GET OFF FACEBOOK NOW AND DO WORK!”
READY – SET – FOCUS
No matter what type of multi-tasker you are you lose your focus when you go from surfing the network to actually doing work on it. So make sure you stay on track for you came there for. Sometimes I’ll go from getting to a part of my project and just have to take a break. I then might send messages to friends but only for a 5-10 minute span. Then it’s right back to work.
Now go at it and get some work done already!
