Getting Motivated and Staying That Way

In blogging motivation is extremely easy to come by. The second part of the equation is the problem. Keeping motivated to blog day-in and day-out seems to be what separated the successful blogger’s and those that aren’t. The truth of the matter is I am a fairly optimistic person and see that people are naturally motivated in life. Yet, they can’t stay that way.

Before going in-depth in this post I want to publicly thank Jamie Harrop for his blog post on Motivational Videos. They are truly awe inspiring and suggest each one of my readers to head over there and take a look. As I watched these video each one with different meaning to the next I felt lead to write about motivation.

To begin I’m not “on” all the time. I’m not motivated every hour of every day. I am human and sometimes around 3:00 pm EST I have to make a pot of coffee to keep me going. So, please take what I say with a grain of salt as well as anyone else that tries to say “this is the way to stay motivated“. If you think that this post is going to keep you motivated in your blog, job, career or just in life. FORGET IT!

I’m going to cut to the chase as to not waste your time:

FIND YOUR MOTIVATION – WRITE IT DOWN – PUT IT EVERYWHERE!

There, now isn’t that easy?

When I first started thinking of getting into the online media market and figured out what blogging is all about I read all the success stories. Immediately I got motivated. I put up content, saw the numbers increase, and…well, the dollars didn’t come in rolling as I first imagined. It didn’t matter though because my motivation was not derived for money (although it sure does help!) rather having an eVoice to show people how to do various social media strategies online for themselves or their companies.

The object though is to keep motivated so if we have our “eyes on the prize” we should keep going, right? WRONG! I’ve been looking at the finish line so much that I lost sight of ‘why’ I was doing what I was doing. After watching the motivational clip of the Christian movie Facing The Giants I remembered that giving my ‘best’ in all that I do is what needs to be practiced. Not trying to dictate that, “if I do this project I’ll make this connection and make this much money.” While money is a factor, my true joy comes from helping people/companies.

In the past when I was first truly interested in this one way or another finances came through. A project I would be involved in would blossom to something else that I never thought it would. I am far from saying don’t stop planning your priorities rather don’t JUST keep looking at the finish line with the thought, “once I get there, I know I made it,” because truth be told – it is JUST the beginning.

Then there was the video of Team Hoyt. One word “wow”. I’ve read the story and even seen similar clips but never in the motivational context. Yet, it is without a doubt a great motivational clip and having a healthy young son it hits a little close to home. Though my wife and I are blessed to have a son whose not in that position I can see the direct correlation of motivation. He is one the main reasons I work so hard and have very little sleep. He is the reason each time he says he “can’t” do something I reiterate him that that word just means “not yet” and that you “can” do anything if you try. This is why I have numerous pictures of him around me when I work.

To reiterate the point once more:

FIND YOUR MOTIVATION – WRITE IT DOWN – PUT IT EVERYWHERE!

What’s your motivation?

The link to Jamie’s website proved very useful. I’ve bookmarked the URL as one of my favourites. I find motivation one of the easiest things. Being focused is difficult, but great pointers throughout!

    Excellent post, Nathan.

I find most of my motivation comes from having a set schedule of tasks. When I can go to bed knowing exactly what I need to do tomorrow and what order I need to do them, I feel much more motivated to rise early and do them.

It gives me much needed direction and purpose.

Unfortunately, I don’t drink coffee, so in those afternoon lulls that occur I have to settle for loud music and the old water in the face trick. :)

    Jamie
