Twitter: 140 Characters of Networking
It’s growing popularity yet for some reason those in networking don’t understand the purpose behind it. They don’t understand the usefulness or the possible connections you can make with just 140 characters. You will be surprised – I know I’ve been in the last few months.
I will go on the assumption that you are already aware of what Twitter is. CommonCraft does some great videos on social networking sites and just how useful they are.
Feel better now? You understand? Okay, maybe you are like me and thought, “hey this is a good idea for friends and family but for actual networking? Seriously?!”
Okay, so dive into it a little shall we?
Before going into that we need to determine why readers read your blog or consumers purchasing from your website. Its rather simple when you think about it. Most readers read blogs that they can relate to – the blogger becomes their filter system in that niche. If a blogger writes about the latest technology and you love gadgets and that particular blogger style in writing then a trust is built. The same goes for businesses online. Think of the last few places you bought online. If you purchased on Amazon.com then 9 out of 10 times you were more than willing to purchase again from there. If you bought from Ebay and were happy about the product then you were probably more willing to see what they offer in the future.
Take that simple idea of filtering and now apply it to everyday use and how your audience can learn more about you. By allowing users into specific parts of your life – from interesting articles you run across and feel like sharing to awaiting to board a plane to go to a conference.
Just 140 characters allow the audience to have sense of a relationship with you. While some people might be put off by that this is just because the possibility of security issues that can arise. Of course these are the type of individuals who just don’t know when to shut up. Seriously, people need to what and when to use twitter. If you are going to the bathroom – no one cares. If you talk about the area of where you live and about how you’re constantly gone I hope you have a good security system. Just because you’re twittering doesn’t mean your at home even if you mention a new blog post. People are getting smarter and the one great feature of twitter is that of using it on the go – texting your twit.
I’ll be touching more on marketing and advertising using twitter but you can already guess on how you can get to that point from what I’ve touched on.
What are your thoughts so far on Twitter? Oh yeah – feel free to add me @drivenmg
