The Quest for Answers: Google!
Consider this more than a rant more than anything. Yesterday, for one reason or another I had numerous people coming up to me asking the most annoying questions. Questions I didn’t have the answers to but know where to find them but it would take majority of the day. So, I told them to look for it themselves and long story short: they huffed and went away angry….why?
Why can’t people look for answers themselves? Are people really getting that lazy? Unlike the X-Files the answers ARE out there. There is no conspiracy theory on what the budget was last month as compared to last year. There’s no skull society plotting to disrupt your afternoon of why your computer is locked up (ummm, try because you have 20 different programs running).
I even posed the question to the plurk community. I am just baffled by this almost daily. It reminds me of a conversation I had with a high school classmate a few weeks ago. Technology and generations: What happened?
It seems that everyone in my generation: 24-35, utilize technology in every aspect. It was our generation that has taken the web 2.0 to new levels in the last 5-8 years. If you look at a lot of the popular online start-ups the creators are in that age range. So, how come those below us or before us don’t use the technology as much as we do? Is it we “get it” more or what? I am at a loss when it comes to this.
We use technology to make our lives easier from syncing up our google calendars with our iphones/blackberrys. We have various programs running to sort out our projects and use recording technology to demonstrate to others. We are the verge of web 3.0, if that is even possible but then again who would’ve thunk of web 2.0. People are using various sources to communicate and build there networks. The phone is pretty much dead and everything is run on social network sites such as twitter, plurk, facebooks, myspaces, bebo’s, and even more as time goes on. Who uses a fax machine anymore when in all honesty you can “fax” from your computer.
Is technology the answer? I will never say that. As much as I am a supporter of technology and how I feel its improved our lives its also hindered some people’s ability to work on inner-personal skills. The skill to have an open line of communication is slowing dying down. I firmly believe there needs to be a balance of this. On a side note I am amazed that more people are trying to get healthy by video games with the help of the wii fit. No more going to the gym – its utilizing technology.
The bottom line: Don’t let technology use you – YOU USE technology. Have it improve your life. Don’t let it run you – YOU RUN it. The minute you start to pull away from friends/family and just about any obligations you are involved in then technology has taken over. Recognize it and change IMMEDIATELY.
This has happened to me and pray it never does again and hope it doesn’t happen to you. Or has it? I’d like to hear your story if you’re willing to share of course.

very true!
