Missing Out On Opportunity
You know the catchphrase about opportunity knocks you better answer? Well, the same goes for bloggers. While I’m currently looking for writers for various sites that I run I’ve found out that a lot of these so-called writers are missing out on a great opportunity. Yet, the question is what is this “great opportunity”?
When I spoke on how to get writers for your site I didn’t dive into how to show them that writing for your site is a “great opportunity. I could go into it right now but in all actuality it can vary site to site. Some sites you might get paid (pennies on the dollar) depending on the popularity of your write-up. Others you get experience of writing and expanding your portfolio.
Allow me to give you a prime example. I had a “writer” request to write for my hip hop site who had no prior experience. They also had no contacts in the industry. So basically they were starting from scratch. I thought I’d give them a shot because you never they could surprise you. They asked for help to figure out how to write and how to gain connections in the industry. In which I ‘tutored’ them for two weeks and set them loose.
In the third week they were talking with artist they were listing to years ago wishing they could meet. Their dream was coming true. People in the industry knew who they were. Now insert ego.
No matter what you do in life once you start doing well your ego gets in the way – one way or another. I’ll speak on that at a later time. For now giving a blogger/writer an opportunity of a lifetime can turn into a headache from hell. In the 7th week this writer felt he knew it all and tried to go out on their own.
*Quick Side-Note* Unless your literally paying your writer then don’t expect them to stick around – they have no true obligations to you.
I’ve learned in the past that to hold grudges is both childish and a waste of time. You would be amazed at the time I’ve saved by building relationships with those that have gone on and did their own thing. In the end they had a great opportunity and seized it. Am I upset they left? Nope. They are doing their thing and am proud of them for that. I can proudly say that I’ve helped them and vice-versa.
So when an opportunity is handed to you don’t just open the door. Take off the hinges and take everything you can. Learn more and move forward because opportunity hardly knocks twice.
